Should I fix my old computer or get a new one?

Whether it is spyware or a bad hard drive, sometimes a computer can go bad.  It's always hard to decide whether or not you want to fix the computer that you have or to buy a new one.  This month we will focus on which decision you should make and why you should make it.  From price to purpose, there are many reasons for that decision.

If your computer is only 2-3 years old, chances are good that you just have some spyware or virii.  It is a task that usually takes a couple of hours to do.  After that, your computer usually works better and faster than it did before.  Even a bad hard drive could be easily fixed by buying a new one and reinstalling Windows on it.  But there is the occasion when the motherboard can go bad.  The motherboard connects the rest of the computer together along with the processor.  Depending on what type of computer you have, you may pay a pretty penny to get that replaced.

A new computer has many advantages over an older system ranging from a faster processor to more RAM and hard drive space.  Prices are coming down on newer, faster systems, and quality is going up.  You also have the ability to copy over all of your old files to the new computer.  Programs, however, you may have to buy to install on the new computer, especially if the new computer comes with Windows Vista.  Vista does not support Quickbooks 2006 or older, Microsoft Office XP (2002) or older, and many other older programs.

There are pros and cons in either scenario, so you may want to do some research on your own.  If you have some spyware or virus issues, I would recommend going to these sites:

The first website is to show you the different internet security suites available and their ratings.  The second and third sites are good anti-spyware programs that will help you with some problems.  Or you could call your friendly geek over at RentOurGeeks.com.

As for a new computer, the best choices are usually Dell or Gateway.  Both places have great variety as well as decent costs.  HP and Compaq are found at your local retail store along with Gateway and EMachines.  As a general rule, I won't pay less than $1,000 for a new computer system.  This will make sure that all of the specs for the computer will not be obsolete for the next 3-5 years.  And even at that mark, it will still be a decent computer.
