Ways to speed up Windows Vista.

Windows Vista has been on new computers for several months now.  By now I am sure that you have noticed Windows Vista may seem to run a little bit slower than XP.  There are several performance options that you can set to make Windows run faster without changing too much of the functionality.  These performance options are also in Windows XP with the exception of Aero options.

First of all, the picture on the left can be viewed in its full scale by clicking on it and then maximizing that window.  The easiest way to get to the Performance Options window is to hold down the Windows key and press the Pause/Break Key.  In XP, you then click the Advanced tab, and under the performance section, click Settings.  In Vista, just click Advanced System Settings on the left side.  The particular options that I delete are the settings that have anything to do with fade and slide.  This makes each window come up faster and uses less memory for Windows.

If you click on the picture to the left, you'll notice that it is the Disc Cleanup window.  This is where you delete all of your temporary files from when you installed programs or visited a web site.  To get here, you click on Start and click run.  Type cleanmgr.exe  then hit enter.  It will scan what you have on your computer.  The next screen, you simply check all of the things that you want to delete, which is usually everything.

These are just a couple of things that you can do to help improve the performance of your computer.  Another thing that you can do is to limit how many programs are starting up with the computer.  The lower left hand corner of the taskbar by the clock shows what programs are running in the background.  If you just bought your computer, chances are good that there are several.  Open each of them up, find out what they do, and figure out if you need them or not.
