Is a free WiFi "hotspot" really free?

WiFi is a wireless connection to a high speed internet service such as cable or DSL.  Many WiFi setups are considered "hotspots".  Usually these are found in coffee shops, restaurants, and malls.  These companies provide these services to their customers, and state that they are 100% free.  Many homes also have WiFi so that they can use their laptops wirelessly around their houses.

There are 4 generations of WiFi currently in use: B, G, MIMO, and N.  Each has a different connection speed and range.  B is the slowest with 11 Mbps (Megabits per second) with a range of approx. 35 meters (114 feet).  G has 54 Mbps with a range of about 35 meters (114 feet) as well.  MIMO can be used on G or N and has 3 antennae, allowing for multiple signals coming in and out at the same time.  This makes the connection stronger and more reliable.  N has 74-248 Mbps connection as well as a range of around 70 meters (230 feet).

Now that you know what WiFi is, you also need to know when you can use it.  Recently, in Sparta, Michigan, a man was arrested for illegally using the WiFi hotspot at a coffee shop without going into the business.  Many people would think that using a WiFi hotspot would be legal and free.  But in Michigan, there is a law (click here to see the law in its entirety) that basically states: you cannot use a WiFi hotspot without permission.  This means that you have to be a paying customer to use their internet service.  The law dictates that the convicted get 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.  The judge lowered his particular sentence to $400.00, 40 hours of community service, and 6 months probation.

So be aware before you use someone's free internet service in your area, that there may be someone watching you and that you could be arrested.  If you are inside the establishment and a paying customer, then you are fine.  Currently Michigan is the only state known to have such a law.
