Recently, there have been several Mac vs. PC commercials on television. Almost every customer that I have come into contact with asks me if they should just get a Mac instead of a PC. The following will explain the pros and cons of a Mac and how they relate to whether you should get one or not.
A Mac, short for Macintosh, is a computer that has been used ever since Windows was around. Macs are generally better at handling graphics, video, and music. A Mac gets less viruses than a Windows machine as well. There are a lot of programs out there that are made for a Windows as well as a Mac. The problem is just to find them. You either have to buy them online, or from a Mac store. You will seldom ever find any Mac software in a retail store otherwise. Another problem is that if you are already a Windows user, it is a little more difficult to get used to the Mac OS X operating system. If you like to customize your computer yourself, you also do not have that option when it comes to a Mac. You cannot just go out and buy a video card and install it so you can play your new game.
As far as a PC is concerned, the newest operating system from Microsoft is something to be reckoned with. Windows Vista has many security features, visual enhancements, and the same overall look and feel of previous Windows versions that you may be used to. Program compatibility is generally just an update away. Several companies are updating their programs for the new operating system every day. Windows Vista has only been out for a couple of months now, but after 6 months or so, all the compatibility issues should be worked out.
One thing to remember in all of this is that Mac can only run on Mac hardware. Windows and Linux can run on PC and Mac hardware. PC hardware you can buy from any retailer, while Mac hardware you can only buy from a Mac store, or online. But with the possibility of less viruses, it really just depends on what you want to do with your computer, how much you want to spend, and what you are comfortable with. |
