A dual core processor is a CPU with two separate cores on the same die, each with its own cache. It's the equivalent of getting two microprocessors in one.  There are many different chips that are dual core, but we will only focus on two of them.

AMD and Intel are both processor manufacturers.  They have been competing directly for several years now with no competition as far as PCs go.  The most popular chips are the AMD 64 x2 and the Intel Pentium D processors.  Both are very good, but which one should you buy?

AMD has always been a personal favorite of mine since the 500 Mhz processors.  those days are far gone now and the newest processors generally are at least 1500 Mhz to start with.  This particular dual core processor is 2 64 bit processors on the same chip.  It is enhanced for gaming, CAD design, and other graphic intensive programs.  And once Windows Vista comes out, 64 bit computing will be fully supported.

The current winner as far as speed goes is the Pentium D processor family.  Generally each processor is at 2800 Mhz or above.  They are dual core processors that run at 32 bits, however.  Logically, they can make one 64 bit processor, but the AMD still out performs the Pentium.  But until 64 bit computing can be achieved through Windows Vista, the Pentium chips are far superior in power.

So for everyone looking toward the future, the AMD chip is less expensive, more powerful, and uses less energy than the Pentium chips do.  But if you want more power now and are not willing to wait for another year, get the Pentium D processor and have fun.
