In light of the recent Dell battery recalls, this month's newsletter is about warranties, service plans, and how companies view each of these. When you buy a new laptop or desktop, the person selling it to you asks you if you want to buy a service plan or extended warranty. Many people hear these words and automatically say no, mainly because they don't know what it is.
If you look at the picture on your left, you would be surprised to find out that this laptop caught fire from a defect in its battery. If this customer has a warranty that is current, Dell will replace this item for free. A warranty guarantees that a product is free from defect. If one is found, it is fixed or the unit is replaced. Generally a manufacturer's warranty lasts for the first year from the time you buy it. You can get an extended warranty by paying a little more. But it is important to remember that a warranty does not cover anything software based, unless specifically stated.
A service plan is something sold by retailers and some manufacturers. A service plan is almost the same as a warranty. There are, however, some differences. For instance, a service plan includes an extra battery for your unit if you need one. It includes cleanings as well to keep the unit working longer. And just as the warranty does, the service plan covers any defect as well as if the unit is surged by electricity. A few more things to remember about warranties and service plans: They do not cover accidental damage unless specified. There are accidental damage warranties and service plans for that. Also, they do not cover water damage, fire damage, or theft. And as I said before, if you have a computer and you get a virus, it is not covered. So remember, if a sales person comes up to you in a store and offers you a service plan with the device you are planning to buy, ask them for a pamphlet of their service plan and read it over before you get it. Sometimes a service plan or extended warranty is worth it if you know what it is for. |
